Current Transformers

Current transformers are instrument transformers with voltage or potential transformers. Device transformers scale high voltage or current values to small, standardized values that are easy to use for instruments and protective relays. Instrument transformers isolate measurement or protection circuits from the high voltage of the primary system. A current transformer provides a secondary current which is directly proportional to the current flowing in the primary. The current transformer offers a negligible load on the primary circuit.

Current transformers are current sensing units of the power system and are used in generator stations, electrical substations and industrial and commercial electrical energy distribution.
